Synopsis
Margo’s older sister, vanished when she was 11 years old. A disturbing note of five words was found next to her synthesizer. Many years later, Margo, becomes a famous songwriter. Margo’s dark family past and her most inner fears, haunt her and force her to isolate herself to her apartment in Athens. For sever years she only sees Rhea, a nurse that looks after her and is her connection to the outside world. In her 40th birthday, Margo decides to throw a birthday party to reunite with her old colleagues. Her music producer Duke. Eve the singer. Her lyricist Gertrud. Her backup singers Serenata and Rozalia. During the party everything escalates when strange people and creatures start coming out of Margo. A psychosomatic effect that Margo shared with her older sister.

A tender horror flick, an experimental melodrama. Any attempt made to categorise this unconventional cinematic experience seems inadequate. Greek director and musician Alexandros Voulgaris, a.k.a. The Boy, brings us an unusually intimate, yet expressively powerful study of an artist on the brink of middle age. All fears, anxieties and hopes are embodied in the character of Margo, a songwriter who was once famous but who now isolates herself in her apartment. A party held to celebrate her 40th birthday and the emotions that are born there unexpectedly help Margo enter a new stage in her life.

It started when I went to a concert by an artist who was quite similar to the one portrayed in the film. The whole experience of watching her on stage was very intense. So I began writing something based on that, and over these 11 years, the core idea remained the same...”

Jakmile vidím na KVIFF v programu u filmu země původu: Řecko a v synopsi navíc ještě popis nežný horor, jdu tam. Právě v tento moment se mi moje naivita přestala vyplácet. Mělo mě varovat to další slovo v synopsi: experimentální. Můj mozek totiž zažil takový experiment, že jsem se z něj vlastně dostávala ještě několik dní po projekci. Přesně tyhle epileptické, videoklipové tvorby a formy já ve filmech nedávám, protože ty pro mě patři primárně do videoklipů. Tento snímek mi celkově připravoval každou chvíli jiný výplach mozku a pokud bych si ho pustila doma, vypínám to za pět minut. Dalším prvkem pro mě neuchopitelným byly ty písně s texty, které vám prostě absolutně nedávají smysl, potažmo dialogy, které nedávají ještě větší smysl. Sem tam se snažíte odkrýt nějakou metaforu, rozklíčovat hlubší sdělení, pochopit pocity hlavní hrdinky, zjistit, co jsou které postavy zač, zda to jsou vůbec lidé. No a pak tu jsou ty "hororové" prvky, kterých je bohužel pro mě velmi málo, ale ve finále je to štěstí, protože jsou tak příšerně pojaté a nedávají mi opět žádný smysl. Ve finálě mě tento film přesvědčil, že se ho ani nechci snažit pochopit. Tohle byl prostě bolestivý útok na solar a po opuštění sálu ve stavu mozkové agonie, jsem si musela jít nechat vydunit orgány na spirituální a ambientní koncert Lenky Dusilové, který mi v ten moment prokázal z mentálního hlediska opravdu velkou službu. I tohle je KVIFF. (KVIFF 2025)
