When creating our movie we took an instinctive approach and started filming without a script. The story developed as we were shooting in the course of almost two years. The result is natural dialogue and unique characters. Here is how we did this: 1. All characters must be as closely based as possible to the personality & experience of the actors playing them. The individual comes first, the character – second, with the story unfolding as e result of the natural, instinctive impulses of the actors. 2. The actors are chosen based on their life stories & general persona. A true connection & trust must be developed during the casting process between the creators and the actors. 3. The actors must be fully involved in the process & have faith in their own instincts, as well as those of the creators. Suggestions, changes & ideas on the set are strongly encouraged. Film is, by default, a collaborative effort – it is time for it to return back to its original form. 4. The story emerges in the editing process. No finalised storyline exists prior to the rough cut. Editing is not part of the post production but an essential part of production and we trust in it to extract the essence of the story, even re-structure & re-write it. 5. No make-up & costumes are used to hide imperfections or highlight any face/body features. Only what the actors use in their day-to-day is true. 6. Scenes must be based around location, not the other way around, as is the norm. Find a location which feels right to you and then shape the story to fit that location. 7. Continuity is overrated. If the audience is occupied with continuity inconsistencies it means that it is not following the story and the characters. 8. There should be no timelines, deadlines & restrictions of any kind on the shooting schedule. The film takes as long as it takes to emerge complete & we must fully rely on the intuitive process, no matter the length. 9. Trust in the story. It knows where it wants to go. It knows how to flesh itself out within the small universe of talented and trusted collaborators. |
