Nanookfilm is a small art-house production in Vienna, Austria.The company has been a place for difficult projects of certain artistic values. Years ago we had met Aki Kaurismäki and admired a pile of metal boxes in his living-room-turned-office in Helsinki. He explained to us that he always had a complete set of film equipment ready, in case he wanted to shoot something. Naturally we liked that a lot. In order to stay independent and to improve the technical quality of our directors' films, we got one of the first RED digital cameras for Austria and subsequently shot the country's first digital 4K film with this camera system. (That was two full years before Arriflex went digital.) We stayed true to this principle and are now on the fourth generation of RED cameras for our productions. Films we produced have been screened at A-festivals in Rotterdam Competition, Toronto, Locarno, Busan, Lisbon, Mar del Plata, at the Berlinale and many smaller international festivals. Coming from and working in the camera dept. of our productions, we are close with actors and crew, thus always having good rapport with everybody on a shoot. And that is definitely a major advantage when you work with smaller art-house type budgets.
