Sacred Ground in Leipzig
February 10, 2023

Sacred Ground in Leipzig

Sacred Ground directed by Sergey Kozmin will be screened at Cinémathèque Leipzig as a part of a screening series, called "Screening Religion". The screening will be followed by a discussion.

22th March, 19.00,  Cinémathèque

Some time ago they would come here to walk their dogs, play with their kids or jog. Today they are two hostile parties fighting over a patch of ground in a park.

Every Sunday half of them come to pray by a wooden cross, and another half is there to defend a small spot of land, which they want to stay public.

Who could have imagined such a confrontation in a country which had been fully secular, even atheistic for decades? Still, a collision between orthodox believers and local dwellers, who don’t want to have a new church instead of a park or a public garden is quite common in the Russian capital these days.

Cinémathèque Leipzig, founded in 1991, sees itself as a place for cultural and social debate with and about film – across all art forms. It shows current cinema releases, selected films in (new) thematic-artistic contexts, curated film series, and experiments on the borders of film, accompanied by film talks, discussions, introductions, and exhibitions. All films are shown – as far as possible – in their original version with subtitles.
