Born in Paris on the 9th of February 1962, having spent almost all his life in Bruxelles – where he studied – and having moved back in Tuscany in the very last few years, Giovanni Cioni is a director with a rooted and deeply European view. Maybe due to this “international touch”, his movies are well received and acclaimed worldwide.
Giovanni Cioni’s filmography, impressive for the wide range of themes and accurated research, speaks for itself, showing out the astonishing resonance of his work. Among his latest films, NON È SOGNO, premiered at Locarno 2019, official selection; VIAGGIO A MONTEVIDEO has been selected at Cinéma du Réel 2017 and at the Mostra internazionale del Nuovo Cinema di Pesaro 2017; DAL RITORNO, was selected in international competition at Cinéma du Réel 2015, Biografilm Festival 2015, Filmmaker Festival 2015, Trieste Film Festival 2016; PER ULISSE, won Best Film Award (international competition) and Cinemaitaliano Award at Festival dei Popoli 2013, Special Mention at Cinema dei Diritti Umani Festival 2013, screened in world première at Vision du Réel (internationl competition) 2013 and then at the États généraux du film documentaire 2013 in Lussas; GLI INTREPIDI premiered at the “Giornate degli Autori” – 69° Mostra del Cinema di Venezia; IN PURGATORIO was selected and awarded in several festival worldwide (just to mention a few: Festival dei Popoli, Bellaria and Cinéma du Réel etc.) before starting its successfull theatrical distribution in Belgium and France.
Giovanni Cioni is also involved in workshops and seminars he helds in schools and universities, in Italy and internationally. Many retrospectives have been dedicated to his work such as those organized by Visions du Réel in Nyon in April 2011 and by Annécy Cinéma Italien in 2019.
